How to Use a Joystick for PTZ Functions

In LearningSpace’s Single Room View within the Recording module, PTZ cameras can be selected for joystick-driven operation.

The joystick can be connected via the USB plug whenever PTZ control is needed. It is automatically detected upon plugging it into the computer.

The connection is indicated by the header of the camera panel switching to yellow.

AXIS TU9002 Joystick

  1. Plug in the joystick.

  2. Go to Single Room View of the Recording module.

  3. The joystick is detected automatically.

  4. When pressing a button on the joystick, the specific camera is selected and marked in a yellow frame.

  5. The camera will follow the PTZ operation of the joystick (continuous pan, tilt, zoom).

Continuous operation means that the camera will not be repositioned in increments but continually.

  6. Use joystick buttons J1-J2-J3-J4-J5-J6-J7-J8-J9 to select the camera to PTZ.

Button numbering corresponds to window numbering.

The “toggle” button in the middle can switch between 2 button lines. The active button line will light up white.

⚠️ In LearningSpace, the play/pause / forward / rewind functions are unavailable.

Instead, we have “J7 J8, J9” buttons with which we can select the corresponding 7th, 8th and 9th camera windows.

If a button relates to a non-PTZ-capable camera, nothing happens; a warning message is shown.

  7. PTZ-capable cameras can be switched with Left / Right buttons (on top of the stick)

  8. Precise control: With the toggle button, we can press the M1/M2 buttons.

    1. By default, the precise control is disabled, which means faster camera movements.

    2. M1 button: the precise control will be enabled (slower movements can be performed.)

    3. M2 button: the precise control will be disabled.

Corresponding information messages are shown. (Precise control enabled / Precise control disabled)

  9. (optionally) for low-delay video output to a dedicated monitor:

    1. When entering the SRV, the decoder will show the first PTZ-capable camera image on the connected monitor.

    2. When PTZ-ing the camera, the monitor will present the camera movement as expected but with a lower delay (~400 milliseconds) than SRV in the browser (~0.8-1.5 seconds).

    3. When selecting another camera to PTZ, the decoder will switch to that source and display it on the monitor.

Only Axis cameras are displayable via the decoder.

Axis T8311 Joystick

In Single Room View, the first PTZ camera will be selected for joystick-driven operation, and the connection is indicated by the header of the camera panel switching to yellow.

  1. Once the joystick is plugged in, check whether the system has detected it.

Press any of the keys on the joystick to facilitate detection.

2. Enter the Single Room View for the desired room.

NOTE: If none of the camera panels switches to yellow (as shown below), press any buttons on the joystick.

3. J1-J2-J3-J4 buttons will select the the first 1-2-3-4 camera window. If the layout changes, it’ll be consistent with the buttons, too, immediately.
If the specific camera is not PTZ-capable, we get a warning message (same as for the new joystick).

L-R (left-right) buttons can be used to select the previous/next camera.
(Based on this, we can only select the 9th camera by pressing the R button more times, for example)

4. Push the stick right or left to move it horizontally (panning).
For a vertical change of position (tilting), push it forward or pull it back.
Zooming in can be done by turning the knob right while turning it left prompts zooming out.

5. Press any other button on the joystick to adjust another PTZ camera.
