   Both the **Category #1** and **Category Failed** panels are automatically added.

:::warning
***IMPORTANT:*** The categories must be ordered according to the percentage values. That is, the best (highest achievement) category must be Category #1, while the next range of percentages should be set within Category #2, etc.

:::

To set up Performance Categories:

* Specify the **Categories** for the Activity
* Add **Requirements** to Categories
* Specify **Category Failed**

# Specifying Categories

1. Choose an existing category or click **Add New** **Category**.

:::info
   Each category is numbered sequentially and is presented in its own panel within the **Performance Category Setup** screen. To remove a category, select **Delete Last Category**.

2. Enter the name of the category in the **Name** field.
3. If desired, enter a **Category Description** to summarize the category briefly.
4. Repeat as desired to create categories and then move on to specify the requirement(s).

# Adding Requirements to Categories

1. Select **Add** **New** **Req.** button to create a new requirement line with a logical operator between the requirements.

   Requirements are made up of two parts in the categories.

   1. **Scope:** the kind of score the requirement is about.
   2. **Check Value:** the value the particular score should be compared to. This could be an absolute (50%) or relative value (class average - 2 STDEV).

:::info
   The **Scope** and the **Check Value** are always **separated by the > sign**, indicating that the **selected score should be greater than the selected check value to fulfill the requirement.**

   :::
2. Define the Category Requirements using the **Requirement Set** panel.

   1. From the **Select SP** drop-down menu, choose the SPs (optional).
   2. Select how many requirements must be fulfilled from the **Must pass** drop-down menu.
   3. Select a scope for performance evaluation from the **Scope** drop-down menu (depending on the condition and level of the criteria).

      ![](https://outline-production-attachments.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/uploads/6c0da235-ff99-49fd-81af-d32f613692dd/24b78f79-7da6-41fd-9c82-b537ee8ccef0/76909469.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA4EOUDTOVUICLPZ4P%2F20260909%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260909T121500Z&X-Amz-Expires=86400&X-Amz-Signature=4fb3eb82faec039976704150942b2a33c5f0766f65a8a94bec878c4065e6e08b&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject)

   4. Use the **<** and **>** indentation arrows **to indent the conditions** and logical operators **to enable the level requirement setup**.

:::info
      The '>' '<' buttons, next to the check value drop-downs, indent the conditions and operators, enabling complicated and high-level requirement setup. Indenting has the **same function as parentheses: the first parentheses always stand for the highest indent,** leading towards the lowest. Conditions have to be met according to this structure as well.

      :::
   5. Select a **value** from the **Check Value** drop-down menu.
   6. In the text box next to the **Check Value** drop-down menu, set the numerical value of the condition.

      ![](https://outline-production-attachments.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/uploads/6c0da235-ff99-49fd-81af-d32f613692dd/268cb8f5-9f2c-402a-8c86-57c99fc16ae6/76909482.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA4EOUDTOVUICLPZ4P%2F20260909%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260909T121500Z&X-Amz-Expires=86400&X-Amz-Signature=a80f829bd2afc6f3922cc49e0c90e6bdffd5daac9bb58a8df30a5fa812f196c2&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject " =672x126")

:::warning
      The relational sign in front of the Check Value drop-down menu should be interpreted as follows (based on the above example):![](https://outline-production-attachments.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/uploads/6c0da235-ff99-49fd-81af-d32f613692dd/f886900c-626c-49f1-a3ce-78e7040a20e7/76909483.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA4EOUDTOVUICLPZ4P%2F20260909%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260909T121500Z&X-Amz-Expires=86400&X-Amz-Signature=c375ebc10844407c791fe34acc9825e8254b54ce2697cc8f7e7e8bc79de381ec&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject)
      "The Skill Area Score of the 'test result' skill area **must be greater than** an Absolute Value of 99%"._

      :::

3\. From the **Logical Operator** drop-down menu, choose the operator ***(AND, OR)*** to connect the conditions.

:::info
The **indentation arrows** serve as **brackets**, to optionally level the different conditions.

:::

### About indentation

***For example***, you may want to give the PASSED category to learners who did not do worse than 60% in all cases AND at least 75% overall. This criterion consists of two requirements, and because they are connected with the AND logical operator, the student must fulfill both requirements to qualify for this category. You can also use the OR operator.

**AND:** To connect two simple conditions, both conditions have to be met at the same time in order for the whole criterion to be met.
**OR:** When connecting two simple conditions, at least one condition has to be met in order for the whole criterion to be met.

Even more sophisticated criteria can be formalized by using indentation. In LearningSpace, indentation works as an easier-to-use replacement for logical parentheses.
**For example**, (A OR B) AND C differs from A OR (B AND C). (The first one always requires C, while the second
one does not: if A is true, then it does not care about B and C; it will be OK.) You only have to worry about parentheses if you are using both AND and OR in a criterion. With only ANDs or with only ORs, it does not matter how they are indented. In WebSP, the more you indent a certain element, the more parentheses it would have around itself when translated to mathematical notation. The requirements and logical operators with the highest indentation are
evaluated first, then the ones one level closer to the top and so on.

4\. Remove, add, or duplicate requirement sets as desired using the **Requirement** **Set** control buttons.

5\. When finished adding requirements, move on to specify **Category** **Failed**.

# Specifying Category Failed

1. Once a category is created via the Add New Category button, the **Category** **Failed** is also automatically added.
2. Scroll past the categories and their requirements to find the **Category Failed** panel.
3. To define a **Category Failed**, enter a name into the **Name** field.
4. Provide a brief description in the **Description** field.
5. When finished specifying categories, adding requirements, and specifying Category Failed, select **Save &** **Return**.
