How the Case Total Score of a Learner Is Calculated

From the scores achieved for each section (Section scores) and the weights set when creating a section according to the importance of each Case section, the system generates a score for each Case: the Case Total Score. In other words, it is the weighted average of the section scores of the Case, which is always a percentage value.

Case Total Score = the sum of the products of each section score within one particular Case and the corresponding section weight, divided by the sum of section weights for the sections of one particular Case:

Example

Section 1 weight: 15; results: 11/15

Section 2 weight: 46; results: 21/42

See How the Activity Total Score of a Learner Is Calculated here.

Case Total Score is relevant in the following reports:

Warning

In the Grade and Scores reports, if section scores are set to be displayed in Natural score format, the Case total Score is not calculated based on the sum of Achieved scores divided by the sum of Achievable scores.

Example

The Grade report displayed below is calculated based on the following point values:

Intro: 4/4 – in percents:     100%
HPI: 19/24                              79%
Pulmonary Exam: 1/1        100%
Cardiovascular Exam: 5/6   83%
Extremities: 6/6                  100%
Other 4/4                             100%

Based on the Natural scores visible here, the Achieved/Achievable points are 39/45, of which the average would be 86,6%.

However, LearningSpace calculates the following way, as described further above:

Case total score: The weighted average of section scores in percentage value. Each section's score is multiplied by its weight and divided by the sum of section weights in the Case.

In the example Case, the calculation goes as follows:

  • Section 1 score: 10,000

  • Section 2 score: 7,900

  • Section 3 score: 10,000

  • Section 4 score: 8,300

  • Section 5 score: 10,000

  • Section 6 score: 10,000

  1. Sum of section scores: Add up all the section scores: 10,000+7,900+10,000+8,300+10,000+10,000=56,200

  2. Sum of section weights: Since each section has a weight of 100, and there are 6 sections in total, the sum of section weights is: 6×100=600

  3. Weighted average calculation: Divide the sum of section scores by the sum of section weights: 56,200 / 600=93.67

In short: 10000+7900+10000+8300+10000+10000 / (6 x 100) = 56 200 / 600 = 93,6 = 94% - and this value is displayed in the Grade report.
