Administering Remote or Asynchronous Standardized Patient Encounters
When in-person patient encounters are not possible due to schedule (or isolation due to the pandemic), other options include:
SPs who are willing and able can conduct encounters using the aforementioned video conferencing software from home or campus.
Sim center staff can also host these, with SP and Learner calling in.
This would allow staff, rather than the SP or the Learner, to control the recording after the fact.Recordings from the video conferencing software can be uploaded into LearningSpace.
Some centers have opted to take an asynchronous approach to administer interactions.
A patient scenario can be broken into segments as separate cases within an activity.
Pre-encounters can be utilized for knowledge questions, media review (x-rays, ultrasound, EKG strips, etc.), and patient-specific information.
Within each case, videos of staged encounters or previous exemplars can be embedded but are not a requirement.
Post-encounters can be used for follow-up questions, SOAP note-writing practice, and instructions on how to move to the next case.
Access restrictions typically in place can be removed for self-guided student access.
